• Nicely-restored Austin Healey Sprite Mk3A roadster
• Appealing retro ‘round-nose’ 1275cc Mini S
• Early Renault 4 in daily-driver condition
• ‘No reserve’ 1969 Honda N360 ‘Scamp’
Four charismatic classic small cars – three offered with ‘no reserve’ – are expected to sell for ‘pocket money’ at Shannons Melbourne Late Summer Classic Auction on Monday, February 23.
Sports car enthusiasts around Australia looking for an inexpensive top-down experience have already shown interest in a nicely-restored 1964 Austin-Healey Sprite Mk 3A roadster presented in classic British Racing Green with wire wheels and black vinyl trim.
Offered with sales records dating back to 1977, the Sprite has been the subject of a comprehensive restoration that has included an overhaul of its 1098cc engine, while it has also been fitted with a new clutch and flywheel.
It is expected to make someone feel young again at its expected selling price of $8,000-$10,000.
For Mini enthusiasts, the auction offers the opportunity to purchase a late series, Australian-assembled 1275cc Mini S retro-fitted with the more popular ‘round-nose’ styling of earlier Minis for substantially less than a similarly-engined Cooper S.
The Leyland Mini S in question has been extensively restored inside and out at considerable expense and features a 1275cc engine modified beyond standard Cooper S specs, plus a range of other exterior and interior enhancements.
It is expected to sell with ‘no reserve’ in the $8,000-$12,000 range.
Small, similarly priced and equally thrilling – if you are a 1960s French car enthusiast – is a quirky 1963 Renault 4 Wagon in ‘daily driver’ condition.
The desirable and well-kept early Renault 4 has been a trophy winner and its engine and gearbox were rebuilt by its previous owner.
Shannons expecting it to sell for a similar price to the Mini – $8,000-$12,000.
Japanese car collectors have already shown a lot of interest in the 1969 Honda N360 ‘Scamp’ in the auction that is being offered with ‘no reserve’ and is expected to bring $4,000-$6,000.
Upgraded with the more powerful twin cylinder 600cc engine of is N600 sibling, the Scamp requires some work to bring it up to sound driving standards, but is being sold with a number of spares and period accessories to assist the new owner.
All lots are available for viewing this weekend at Shannons’ Melbourne showroom, 321 Warrigal Road, Cheltenham, with a free sausage sizzle from 9am-5pm Saturday and 10am-4pm Sunday.
