Portland Classics by the Bay: Classic Restos - Series 40

By Shannons - Published on 14 March 2019

Fletch is in Portland, Victoria for the 'Portland Classics by the Bay', an event run by the Portland Auto Classic Car Club. The event has been held for 7 years and continues to grow with over 350 cars and motorcycles expected to attend this year's event. President Craig said this could be attributed to the fact that Portland is reported to have more 'H ' plated cars per capita than any other city.  In this beautiful bay setting Fletch gets out and about to find some of the unique classics that have attended this year.

First up is Geoff with a 1956 Chevrolet that is often overlooked for the more popular '55 and '57 models. This is a beautiful example that was restored 12 years ago and presents very well today. Next, a rare 1976 Holden HX Monaro Limited Edition model with a 5 Lire 308 engine, finished in burgundy and gold that was unique to this model, plus all the luxury appointments of the Holden Statesman of the time.

From the US, a vehicle not seen too often is a 1968 Ford Futura Sports Coupe 2 door with LHD, built originally in Canada and purchased from Texas. To many, this may not be a spectacular classic, but this one caught the eye of the owner who proudly owns it today and talks of its origins.

Something completely different is Dave's 1970 Valiant VG Pacer Hemi 2 Door Hardtop that he found in Alice Springs and painstakingly brought back to life while retaining the patina of the car as he saw it in Alice Springs, complete with 300-400 bullet and shotgun holes.

Last but no means least is an Australian Icon, the Holden 48/215 owned by Tony. This one is a 1952 Model close to the end of production of the FX model. Presented in excellent condition with a 3-speed gearbox and 132.8 engine. Fully appointed with a factory fitted radio of the time in the dash.

What a great setting for the event that is well supported by locals and visiting motoring enthusiasts of the region.
