Yass Boys and their Toys: Classic Restos - Series 46
Fletch continues his regional tour of NSW and visits Yass where three locals are only too happy to share the story of their classic toys.
First is Colin with his 1976 VK Charger that he has painstakingly restored, not precisely to the original model specs, more to his want. Originally a Mist Green it now sports a Vitamin C Orange finish. The previous owner's handy work had resulted in over 100 rust spots that needed to be removed, in addition to Colin's modifications. The result is beautiful, and luckily with a bit of grunt work, he could retain the original interior. Colins still gets the chant 'Hey Charger' as he drives around Yass and says driving the Charger revives memories of his youth and feels so good.
Next, up is Greg, who has an impressive shed to house his Cooper collection, which includes a 1957 Cooper Race Car - purchased by Greg's father when he was 14, a BMW Supercharger and a Morris Cooper S Sedan. Greg's interest in cars started when he followed his father into the trade as a motor mechanic, and he has loved cars and motor racing ever since. The Cooper S sedan was purchased locally for just $100, and a complete rebuild is underway with many of the parts missing.
In the corner of the shed, Fletch spots a very rare 1914 Hupmobile, the story behind this one is fascinating. The original owner stored the vehicle packed with hay to protect it on his property before he went off to war. Sadly he didn't return, the car was found in the '60s, and it's now another project for Greg. Fletch asked Greg, 'What does he enjoy most about his shed?' He replied 'It's a place to come and do the things I want to do - not the things others want me to do'.
Kerry and his wife Ruth have a beautiful retirement setup with their home and a big shed for Kerry's toys just outside Yass. Pride of place in the shed is a 1949 Singer 1200 CC overhead cam British sports car of the period. Kerry admits it wasn't his first choice at a local clearance sale as it was in pieces. But as he considered it, he became more interested in the task of a full restoration. Today the renovation is complete, and he says 'It's very satisfying driving a car that you have fully rebuilt yourself.''
