The Westwood Classic Car Collection: Classic Restos - Series 58

By Shannons - Published on 30 May 2025

Fletch heads to Melbourne to visit Bob and Jude Westwood and explore a few special cars from their impressive collection. Now semi-retired, Bob found great success in business and is now relishing the rewards of his hard work through his passion for classic cars. It's not just the vehicles that Bob enjoys; it's also the like-minded enthusiasts he has encountered throughout his journey, the competitive spirit, and the shared passion for cars that have strengthened the bond between him and Jude over their remarkable 63 years of marriage.

The first classic unveiled is a stunning 1962 Ford Thunderbird Hardtop, a recent addition to Bob's collection. Finished in Chrystal Mint, it boasts a powerful 309 V8 motor and is equipped with modern features for its time, including air conditioning, power steering, and power windows. Bob recalls the contrast in the automotive landscape in 1962 when Australian manufacturers produced models like the EK Holden and the Ford Falcon, which suited local conditions and consumer preferences. The American market focused on family-oriented vehicles such as the Thunderbird, Cadillac, Lincoln, Chevrolet, and Buick. Bob says the Thunderbird is a joy to drive and a very special car.

Next in the lineup is an original 1972 VH E49 Chrysler, a rare gem with only 149 units ever produced. This model had been on Bob's wish list for decades, often deemed too expensive to acquire. Nonetheless, Jude encouraged him almost two decades ago, insisting, "If you don't get one now, you'll never get one." With her support, Bob and his friend David located one in Queensland. After confirming its authenticity with the last registered owner from 1980, they finally realised their dream. Bob considers the VH E49 Charger a unique vehicle that will only increase in value, potentially surpassing even the Ford GT HO's, which he holds in high regard due to their rarity. He sees himself as a custodian of these cars, with a strong desire to maintain their beauty and visibility, preferring to drive them rather than keeping them tucked away. The VH Charger offers an exhilarating driving experience, characterised by its responsiveness and incredible acceleration.

The third car in the Westwood Collection is a 1965 Modified Pro Street XW Falcon Coupe, purchased initially for Jude when she obtained her driver's license in her early thirties. The car served her well before passing it on to her daughter when she married. Years later, the family decided to restore the Falcon, meticulously taking it back to bare metal. Son-in-law Mitch performed the engineering work to transform it into a Pro Street version of the XW Coupe, showcased in a vibrant Turquoise. The car now features a power-packed 302 V8 Windsor motor, a C6 automatic transmission, centreline wheels, a newly revamped interior, and air conditioning for added comfort. Today, the XW Falcon Coupe drives beautifully and has been a cherished part of the family for 35 years.

For Bob and Jude, the camaraderie and friendships forged within the motoring community over the years hold a special significance.
