The Largest Chrysler Event in the Southern HEMI-Sphere: Classic Restos - Series 58

Fletch heads to Albury Wodonga for Chryslers on the Murray, the largest Mopar event outside the United States. Hosted by one of Australia’s smallest car clubs, the Albury Wodonga Chrysler Car Club, this event brings together Mopar enthusiasts from across the country.

The weekend kicks off on Friday with a thrilling opportunity for Mopar owners to test their skills and vehicles at the DECA Training Track. The excitement is palpable as engines roar, creating a thrilling atmosphere filled with the sounds of high-performance machines.

This year’s theme celebrates US Muscle Cars, and Fletch takes a moment to reflect on three iconic Chrysler muscle cars. It all started in 1955 with the Chrysler 300, which featured a Hemi V8 engine producing 300 horsepower—paving the way for muscle cars. Other legendary Chryslers include the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona and the 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner, both known for their distinctive nose cones and rear wings. The Daytona, designed as a stock car for racing, made history by becoming the first car to exceed 200 mph.

A standout feature of Chryslers on the Murray is the impressive display of both original and modified Chryslers, many of which are being shown for the first time. This year, the event proudly introduces several new and eye-catching exhibits.

On Day 2, over 800 Mopars from all over the country make their way to this premier event, solidifying its reputation as a must-attend gathering. American Motors, which has been part of Chrysler since its acquisition in 1987, is well-represented once again. A notable highlight is the 1969 AMX often mistaken for a Javelin, it’s actually a shorter version, with 12 inches removed between the back seat and the wheel arch. Only 19,000 of these were produced over three years, and the one on display is believed to be the only one in Australia. It’s a rare, well-maintained piece of automotive history.

Fletch is always fascinated by the stories behind the cars, and this episode is no exception. He catches up with Duncan, who shares the story of his 1971 VH Charger, a car he purchased as a teenager at the age of 19 and used as his daily driver. After taking it off the road in the early 2000s with no intention of selling, he ultimately decided to undertake a full nut-and-bolt restoration, spurred by the rising value of the popular model. Today, the Charger looks better than when it left the dealership showroom.

In the Pro Street Car section, Fletch meets Andrew, the proud owner of a pristine 1966 VC Valiant. Another incredible find is Rod’s 1964 Plymouth Savoy, which had been in storage for 35 years before being lovingly restored.

Chryslers on the Murray continues to gain popularity, a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Albury Wodonga Chrysler Car Club. Their efforts ensure that this event remains a cherished gathering for Mopar fans and car enthusiasts alike.
