Kumeu Classic Cars & Hot Rod Festival: Classic Restos - Series 57
Fletch returns to the North Island of New Zealand for one of his favourite events, the Kumeu Classic Cars & Hot Rod Festival. This massive 3-day event features over 100 trade sites, 350 swap sites, an eye-catching retro caravan display and an array of food options to cater to all tastes. At the heart of the festival lies what Fletch refers to as the main event, the 'Chrome Plated Display' showcasing over 3,000 classic cars and hot rods from near and far.
As Fletch mingles with local enthusiasts to uncover the backstories of their prized vehicles, he meets Mike, a dedicated attendee who has been coming to Kumeu for the last 15 years. This year, Mike has his 1971 Pontiac Formula 400, restored in California in 2015. The car remains stock standard, reflecting its original state with only one notable change: its colour, which was originally a striking emerald green.
Next, Fletch is drawn to Sean's 1964 Ford Galaxy 500. He is captivated by the graceful lines of this car, which is in its original condition apart from a Holley carburettor and some minor touch-ups to the interior.
Among the myriad of hot rods stands out with his 1938 Dodge Coupe, an intriguing tale of its own. This car has passed through his hands multiple times; he originally acquired it for a mere $200 from a neighbour while he was an apprentice panel beater. However, when he was forced to sell it, his father deemed owning three cars too much and let it go for $250 – a decision that seemed sensible at the time but would come to feel bittersweet later. Years later, Dave managed to reacquire the vehicle for an undisclosed price. Remarkably, he possesses photographs dating back to 1961 that show him alongside the car, long before he initially purchased it.
Fletch then catches up with Donna, the President of the Easy Bay Rods Club, which has been around for nearly six decades. The club and its members have been regulars at Kumeu for many years. This year, she arrives with her impressive 1934 Ford Coupe, sporting a 350 Chevy engine and automatic transmission. Donna's deep-rooted connection to the Hot Rod community has significantly shaped her life and her family's interests.
Concluding his tour of the festival, Fletch is impressed by a stunning 1959 Chevrolet Impala. The vehicle's remarkable styling, along with its exquisite metalwork, stainless steel accents, curved windscreen, and striking fins, highlight the iconic design of this era. This glimpse into Saturday's festivities at Kumeu sets the stage for more excitement and stories to be shared in next week's episode.
