Holden Nationals 2025 Christchurch: Classic Restos - Series 58
Fletch returned to Christchurch on the South Island of New Zealand for the 2025 Holden Nationals. Held at the impressive Wolfbrook Arena, this prestigious event is a true celebration of Holden’s enduring legacy, bringing together over 130 iconic Holdens and HSVs, from the very first models to the final production models all showcased under one roof. The event is hosted by the Holden Car Club of Canterbury, alongside the Holden Federation of Clubs New Zealand.
On the first day of the Nationals, Fletch meets with Ed Beattie, the Vice President of the 2025 organising committee. Ed shares insights into how the event is organised and explains how the eighteen clubs that make up the Holden Federation collaborate to bring this magnificent event to life. While the individual car clubs handle the logistics, the Federation is responsible for overseeing the judging process and awarding the trophies.
Fletch explores the remarkable collection of vehicles on display, starting with a beautifully restored 1968 HK Kingswood sedan. Dave, a judge at this year’s event, walks him through the rigorous 100-point judging system, which classifies each vehicle based on its condition, authenticity, and presentation.
Day two marked the pivotal show day and judging. Fletch selects a few standout vehicles to feature and speaks with their owners. A natural starting point is the very first Holden, a 48-215, owned by Ian, a foundational member of the Holden Federation in New Zealand since 1978. Ian’s 48-215 underwent a total restoration 44 years ago, with a more recent motor rebuild. He proudly stated that the car still drives beautifully today.
Next up is Heather's 1960 FB Holden sedan. This car has been in Heather’s family since it was purchased as a demonstration model from a local Holden dealership. The vehicle carries generations of cherished family memories, and Heather fondly recounts a few stories.
Andrew, a member of the Canterbury Holden Car Club, was motivated by fellow club members to enter his 1987 VL SS Group A Commodore into this year’s competitions. Inspired by the high-quality vehicles and the remarkable Wolfbrook Arena venue, Andrew showcased his car, a favourite among enthusiasts, which has stayed in its original factory condition.
To wrap up day two, Fletch reconnects with Ed Beattie and his prized possession, a 1972 350 Monaro. This vehicle, featuring a rare configuration of a four-speed manual transmission, was originally purchased new in Papua New Guinea and has since undergone a meticulous nut-and-bolt restoration. It stands out as one of the highlights of this year’s Holden Nationals.
On the final day, Fletch joined approximately 150 entrants and spectators for a scenic cruise, culminating in a special luncheon to celebrate Holden's legacy.
