2025 Mustang Nationals: Classic Restos - Series 58
Fletch heads to the iconic Mount Panorama in NSW for the Mustang Nationals, an annual event that brings together passionate Mustang owners and clubs from across Australia. Hosted by the Mustang Owners Club of Australia, this year’s three-day event celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Ford Mustang.
The event kicks off on Friday with entrant registration, allowing Fletch to admire the array of Mustangs as they arrive.
Saturday is dedicated to the serious business of Concourse judging, where entrants compete in four distinct categories: Thoroughbred, Original, Modified, and Restos/Modified. Those seeking a more relaxed experience can join a scenic cruise to Oberon, just outside Bathurst.
Sunday marks the highlight of the weekend: the Show and Shine. Fletch takes up residence in Pit 1 in the pit lane, interacting with owners and their impressive vehicles, some of the finest Ford Mustangs in the country.
First to catch Fletch’s attention is Vic, who owns a stunning 1968 ½ 428 Cobra Jet Mustang that was formerly a drag car in the US. This vehicle has been beautifully restored to its original condition. Fletch learns the story behind the ‘68 ½ designation, and when he asks about how it drives, Vic admits he hasn't really experienced it on the road, having only logged 1.6 km in four years post-restoration. Vic explains that such a thoroughbred restoration is intended for show purposes only, with the car having only travelled from shed to truck to show and back again. This year, Vic proudly competes in the Original class.
Next, Dennis presents his immaculate 1966 Mustang Hard Top, which boasts a gun-barrel straight bodyline. Purchased in California, the car arrived somewhat sunburnt, but after a complete restoration with remarkable attention to detail, it now appears as if it just rolled off the factory floor, if not better.
Fletch is momentarily at a loss for words when he lays eyes on Paul’s 1967 GT500, a concours car classified in the Thoroughbred category. This remarkable Mustang has a storied history, having been originally purchased in New York before making its way to the Philippines and eventually to Australia. After a painstaking 13-year restoration, the result is nothing short of spectacular. Like many others, this car is for show only and has not been driven; for Paul, the joy lies in owning such a beautiful piece of automotive history rather than its practical use.
Contrasting with these restorations, Neil showcases his 1966 Mustang Convertible, which he has maintained in its original, pristine state since acquiring it in 2011/12. Another original vehicle on display is Paul's unique 1971 Mach 1 429 Super Cobra Jet Drag Pack Mustang, which stands out among the collection.
Words often fail to capture the essence of the extraordinary Mustangs at this year's show, but the pictures will. It is a celebration of passion, history, and the undying allure of the Ford Mustang. Enjoy.
