That was one of the problems with sailing, people chundering over the side. Just as bad was the blokes who wanted to pee over the side, rather than go below & use the head. It never occurred to landlubbers to check which way the wind was blowing. Nothing like a big pee, blowing back all over the boat & people to spoil the party. See below the yacht, Alyth, at anchor at Nugeria atoll, 150 miles north of Bouganville, & racing on Sydney harbor. Racing her was almost as much fun as racing the Brabham, & no where near as dangerous.
