I couldn't agree more, DrJohn; my copy of the Great Race only covers the first 21 years and I constantly refer to it, or just sit down with it for sheer enjoyment. Captions like "Queenslander Max Volkers...was probably Australia's finest exponent of 'body English'. Here he occupies the passenger seat to wrestle the Minx into the Dipper" , "One senses the mood of frustration in this classic photograph of Paddy Hopkirk using some of his loose-surface rally technique in a bid to get past the massive Sharp/Derriman Dodge Phoenix on the way past Reid Park" and "Never renowned for either handling or brakes, the Vauxhall VX 4/90 of Queenslanders Paul Fallu and Terry Kraztmann eventually fell over. Behind it here as it heads into the Dipper, a Valiant begins what must have been a terrifying spin" are all shout out loud with laughter. His description of the 1953 Redex Trial is one of the finest pieces of writing to someone who is old enough to just remember the event. How lucky were we to have had writers of the calibre of Bill Tuckey and indeed Evan Green.
