The first FEs had a thin chrome (or stainless steel) surround for the back window. When they started to cross creeks and spoon drains, the window did pop out. I think there were modifications made to strengthen the area supporting the window, and a thicker stainless steel surround was fitted. This extract is from the combined FE and FC Workshop Manual.
