Here's a few examples of facelifting and tail-lifting from the one company - Chrysler Australia with their Royal in the late 1950s. Starting with the 1953 Plymouth as a base, they managed to attach the 1956 US Plymouth front clip and rear end onto the already 4 year old body shell. Out came the tinsnips and a new rear window emerged - the sort of thing BMC did around the same period; look at the Morris Minor 1000 and the Austin A55/A95. Anyway, Chrysler's Royal in AP1 form lasted two years when they decided to add fins to the fins, give it a new grille and side trim so we had the AP2 in 1959. By 1960 the AP3 sported stacked twin headlights, lower fins and De Soto-like side trim and taillights. Take your pick of the three, but the outrageous AP2 with its extra fins is the one for me. I'll have my V8 in red and white...
