It is very hard to see the indicators on those old Valiants. A couple of repeaters on the sides would have helped immensely. I've decided the next job I will attempt on the 300 is the air conditioning. Now that it drives OK when it's cold I can leave it with a mechanic without a long explanation (the exhaust guy was relieved to see the back of it let me tell you). I need to double check it isn't something silly like a dead compressor relay or a broken wire first - the system isn't throwing any A/C related codes so I think it might still have gas in it and if I am very lucky it's going to simply be something to do with the compressor clutch not getting activated. I owned a Triton a few years ago that had inoperable A/C that turned out to just be a dead relay so maybe I will get lucky again although it's a few hours of diagnostics ahead of me. Have been fiddling with the amplifiers a bit trying to isolate a slight buzz in the rear speakers only to find it's coming from the head unit. I re-earthed everything but it didn't go away and it only happens on the rear line level outs. So I did something really stupid and bought this thing on sale (40% off) which claims it does wireless Carplay / Android Auto. It has the same outputs as the Sony (line level front, rear and subwoofer) so the wiring will be near identical. Changing it involves changing the centre console facia, but I already have one that is a rectangle double-din so it should be a simple swap. Except the head unit has inputs for a reversing camera and being a "smart" head unit it also needs wiring for the headlights on, parking brake and reversing lights. Something of a challenge on a car that mostly uses a CAN bus to transmit that kind of information to the dashboard. Before anybody says anything, I know how stupid this is. I hated the last touch screen after market head unit I had because it had no actual buttons or knobs for the volume. This one can apparently integrate with the steering wheel controls and has three physical buttons for volume +/- and the main menu. Can't fit it until an adaptor kit for the dashboard arrives ($13 but from the US) so it will sit on the floor for a while.
