The two local motoring magazines in 1953, Wheels and Motor Manual, gave the FJ very little space when it was announced. This one small photo and brief description appeared towards the centre of the November ’53 Wheels edition, after pages of comprehensive news of overseas shows, two full pages on the new Bristol and a Peugeot 203 on the cover. It took them until May ’54 to feature the FJ on the cover with a road test of a car supplied by Preston Motors, not by the manufacturers like most other cars were. Motor Manual were slightly more generous with a page devoted to the car in December and a cover shot in January. Not a lot of excitement then for a best-selling car which has since become an Australian icon. I think its icon status originated from the number of young Baby-Boomers who in the mid-'60s bought used FJs as their first car. Helped along by such masterpieces such as Bob Hudson's 'Newcastle Song' in the '70s, it developed into a nostalgic tribute for all of us who are that age.
