The transverse engine and the solid tube behind it (just below the air cleaner) holding the hydrolastic displacers were enough to stop any further ingress of the tree. The luggage coming through the boot inside the car and hitting the back of the front seats didn't help. Apparently there was conjecture that if it was a north-south engine, the tree would have gone down one side with possibly worse consequences.
