I’m 75 now. I have fond memories of travelling the Hume and Pacific Highways as a child in the 50’s and a driver after l became licensed in 1964. I grew up in Melbourne and we had a number of xmas holidays as a family during the 50’s to Sydney and Surfers Paradise. Dad had a 52 Buick in the early 50’s and a 56 Cadillac in the later 50’s so admittedly being a passenger was a comfortable experience. My first trip as a driver up the Hume and Pacific H/W’s was in an EH Holden in 1965 to Surfers Paradise via Sydney and subsequently many more trips over the years all in V8 Holden’s up to the early 80’s when l moved to the NT. I have to say l don’t recall road conditions as depicted in the Utube clip to be remotely accurate. No doubt if you “cherry pick” you can make anything look bad. The makers of this film had an agenda and their portrayal of the Hume and Pacific H/W’s was to support that agenda. I have to say l loved driving the Hume before it became a Freeway - before the advent of speed limits when you arrived at the outskirts of each country town and be welcomed by a speed limit that simply said “Please Slow Down”. I had the pleasure of owning a 327 Monaro between 1968 and 1972 with multiple trips up the Hume to Sydney - love the memories of the car(s) and the road(s).
