Slogs you did well to score a few decent Val's, especially at a bargain price for one of them. I really like the Pacer too, so I envy you there. Drove one when near new (my Boss's car) and from memory it had the 3-speed floor shift manual, I was rapt. Dare I ask what the task was with you sitting with the Regal jacked up ?
Pony it was a spot of amateur panel beating with the bumper jack to adjust the quarter panel. I've had plenty of Fords and Holdens, but imo the Valiants were as good or better - or worse, depending on your automotive perceptions. Mate it's funny looking back into what was. You think back to why Valiant owners used to drive with thongs or slip-ons in summer. It was because of those floor level vents, which were not cable operated. Instead there was a that ludicrously crude little catch you had to turn, to open or close the vent door. The easiest method was to shed one of your thongs while driving so you could grab the catch with your bare toes, then twist. Fwiw two of my Pacers were sedans purchased pre-1980, respectively for $112 (a tired example) and $120 (good car, sold to a friend's wife who kept it 5 years). Then in 1981 an exceptionally nice one-owner Hardtop in Hemi Orange from Lennock Motors in Canberra, for $400! Which today would doubtless easily be worth a literal 100x what I paid (sob). Unfortunately I don't have pics of them, but here's one that sorely tempted me, a potential trade-in outside my car yard about 1986? Fitted with a 340 4-speed, the right colour and in great condition. The owner wouldn't drop below $2,250, which was too much to retail it forward, so I had to pass. No one wanted Valiants back then, a genuine buyer's market. To share how utterly cheap you could buy them for, one of my best Mopar bargains was a black CJ 360 ex-Federal Government limo direct from Comcar (via Pickles) in perfect chauffeur-driven condition. There were several Chrysler by Chryslers available. Mine was unmarked and had done 78,000 kms. This was in 1978, it was a '75 model only 3 years old. I wanted it for my D/D. And my successful bid on it was $900. [edit] I'll throw in some other Vals I've owned, all of them good cheap fun cars.
