As the owner of a '59 Impala 2-door hardtop here in England it's nice to see what was on offer in Australia. The top of the line was the Belair and not the Impala but it had leather upholstery which was not offered in the US etc. And I wonder why there wasn't a choice of engine bearing in mind that the small block V8 had been around since 1955 and the 348ci V8 big block since 1958? I would guess the same might be the case for the gearbox, the Powerglide was very dependable but the base choice would have been the three on the tree manual which is what my Impala started life with (it's a four on the floor now). My first US car back in 1976 was a RHD Impala 4-door hardtop with the 235ci six and Powerglide, it was sold new here as was my later '58 Belair sedan with the 283ci V8 and three on the tree. Last week I finally received my Trax model of the Aussie '59 Belair complete with those indicators under the fins, it's a nice addition to my model collection of way too many items! Couple of photos of my Impalas attached, the RHD car was finally scrapped in the 80s and the black coupe is undergoing a very expensive rebuild of its 348ci motor.
