Hi David, In 1967 I purchased my first new car, a Torana SL. overlooking the gutless four cylinder engine, more inspired by the 'Mini-Camaro' looks. With a Weber carb, cam, extractors and wider wheels JVY-868 survived many local rallies! In February 1968 I joined Holden as a cadet designer and for my sins was installed in the Torana studio, initally working with Peter Nankervis. I have to confess that the TA facelift design was mostly my work. A rushed program, adding a plastic body-coloured grille and taillamps to support four cylinder sales until the LH series arrived. To give the four cylinder Torana some much needed poke we had always hoped that Australia could source the 1975cc engine from the Viva GT, however apparently that engine would have been more expensive than the local six! The HB design is rightly credited to Leo Pruneau, under instructions from Design VP Bill Mitchell, turning Vauxhall's concept from a 'sow's ear' to a 'silk purse' almost overnight! Keep up the great stories on our local products.
