I was in the advertising and promotions department of BMC when the Morris 1100 won COTY for 1964. As I remember, we sent out a some point-of-sale showroom posters, and ran a couple of ads in the magazines and let the pretty positive press tell the tale. It was the second COTY after the Renault R8 and I don't think the concept had really cemented itself in peoples' minds. It certainly did when Ford won the next year with the XP. The Wheels cover of January '65 caused some comment including this letter in the March issue. The pic was taken inside BMC with Bill Tuckey leaning on the bonnet on the right. Poor Tony Jones in the lab coat was from the sales department and he had to live down the sad-sack with an underarm problem image from the rest of us. The ad was run in Wheels with the photo that appeared on the front cover of rival magazine, Modern Motor. The other article is from the BMC house magazine 'Rosette' which was distributed out to employees and dealers.
