Another great story Joe; my first car was an FE and not long after I bought it, I joined BMC. The rust in it was horrendous for a near 7 year old car and all the other FE/FC problems which were endemic. However, I loved it in spite of my work colleagues' comments. At BMC in Melbourne we had a Dutch tea lady who had imported a grey Opel Kapitan when they emigrated. (They were going to bring a Renault but were told that Opel was by far the most popular car in Australia…!) the similarities with my FE were remarkable - from near perfect fit of the windscreen, steering wheel and column, centre pillar between the doors and so on. We all reckoned the FE was the better looking - it had a more professional feel to it. Hers didn't leak oil like mine did, nor a smokey by-pass, nor a broom-stick propping the boot-lid up which was another FE/FC woe. We all seem to love our first cars and I did with this one. Still my favourite Holden of all of them.
