BMC were by no means the first (or the worst) at badge engineering. Chrysler Australia, for example started off in the 1940s with Plymouth, Dodge and De Soto all sharing bodies and mechanicals. The culmination came in 1956 before they replaced the three with the Chrysler Royal.
