Until the early 1970s it was common to simply drive your race car to and from events. Take for example Bruce McPhee who drove his HK 327 from Wyong NSW to the Sandown 3 hour race and back, thereafter driving to Bathurst to win the 1968 500. The Holden Dealer Team did similar as did many contemporary competitors. More highly strung race cars could be attached to draw bars and flat towed. A great story involves Alf Barrett in his Alfa 8C2300 Monza being flat towed to Bathurst and firing up the Monza to help push the struggling tow car over a steep hill. In the latter 1950s the Maserati factory team drove their 250F grand prix cars along Brighton Road and the Nepean Highway from Reg Hunts workshop to Albert Park to compete in the Australian Grand Prix. Much more recently the Porsche team drove a trio of 956 sports cars from Hamiltons Clayton Porsche headquaters the five or so kilometres down Princes Highway to Sandown along with a Volkswagen Kombi support car to compete in the 1984 World Endurance Championship round. No trailer or transporter required!
