And yet, in stark contrast, GM-H also committed to an ambitious Formula 5000 (5.0-litre) race engine program in partnership with Repco Engine Developments in 1969, based on the 253/308 block, heads, crankshaft etc. It proved more than a match for the imported Chevrolet V8s and enjoyed great success through the early to mid-1970s. In 1970, F5000's local benchmark Frank Matich summarised what he saw as the main benefit for Holden by using its humble 'family car engine' in Australia's premier category: “It is true that racing improves the design of road cars and for the first time the millions of Australians with cars can see a local family car engine fronting up to the ultimate test in the fastest form of racing. This Repco-Holden V8 has a meaning to every man in the street.” Holden advertising at the time was consistent with Matich's view (click on advert below to see in full). What a great era!
