I guess "Mad Max" kicked things along from 1979 and off the top of my head I'd also nominate "Freedom" and "Midnite Spares", and from New Zealand, "Smash Palace". Talking of "Running on Empty", here's a trailer feature that comes straight off those previews we used to fast forward through when having rented a VHS tape from the local video library ... it's interesting to note how expendable were old Falcons and Monaros back then ...
