I always thought the same. It did not look out of place on a Statesman or a ute. There are those that say the Statesman was originally conceived to be the Kingswood, hence a common light(and wheelbase) across the range. The Kingswood then evolved from the shorter wheelbase coupe. Controversial so don't shoot the messenger!
I think that sequence of development is an urban myth, AAACV8. Phillip Zmood, Peter Nankervis, Paul Beranger and John Schinella, all of whom designed the HQ, told me it was the sedan first, then the others, in order to ensure as many common panels and components as possible to save costs.
Thanks David. You heard if straight from the horses mouth and you cannot have better evidence than that. I still find it interesting that they would use commercial lights on the Statesman, even though they look elegant there too. I bought a unit from Autobarn with two power sockets and the different sized USB ports. I will mount this discretely in the cab. The advantage is that I won't have a power cord from the instrument cluster power outlet that would potentially fall across my legs.
