Even though the XR made a huge impact on our market in 1966, I reckon it's hard to go past (in looks) the original series. My choice of any Falcon would be an XP Fairmont Hardtop or even a Fairmont sedan. However, for purity of line, the original XK had it in spades. Also in those pre-Valiant days, the XK made the FB Holden look decidedly ancient. This pic highlights the XK and also shows the third contender for the 6 cylinder market - the Austin Freeway, seen here as a prototype wearing its Morris Oxford grille. Our family had an XL Deluxe Wagon in Merino White with red Squire interior trim which was as smart as anything in the district, but it didn't quite stand up to rough conditions...... By the way, the Freeway prototype is still in existence and still registered as CEA443; one of the only surviving Australian prototypes of any car. RIP Falcon - a fabulous legacy including Bathurst and London-Sydney Marathon - you did us well.
