For most of my working life, I had the use of company cars. At BMC I was able to take most of what was available home for the night and most weekends. The first new company car allotted to me was a VC Commodore - an almost poverty pack L with a 3.3 litre rather than the standard 2.8 six. Dealer preparation was appalling, with paint blemishes, and niggly things that could not be excused. It also appeared to have been transported up to Queensland on the bottom row, and the car above it leaked some sort of fluid all over the roof, which needed repainting. I had the choice of an XD Falcon, but the Commodore's size suited me, and once the faults were rectified, I got about 100,000 fairly trouble free kms. All company cars are wonderful if they have a tow bar fitted, which comes in handy when the 1800 decides not to proceed.... The next new car was a VL Commodore - also the base model, but better assembled than the VC and almost as many features as standard equipment in the VH SL/E that I inherited from one of the retiring managers. That Nissan engine was sweet as, and more than once I found myself explaining to a country copper why I was slightly (!) over the limit. I never regretted all the early Commodores I have had anything to do with - pretty good for the job they were designed for.
