Mark, it is interesting to see how some are winding back. It is a monumental task. As far as I know, legislation does not allow removal of steering wheels, yet. Tesla is the most advanced and are rolling out self-driving for city and highway use across North America to anyone that has optioned the package or is paying a subscription. The way I see it, the first 80% of development will take 20% of the resources and the final 20% will take 80% of the resources. The differences that so far have worked in Tesla's favour are: 1. They have designed their own supercomputer, one of the most powerful in the world, specifically for video processing and self-driving. 2. Every Tesla passenger car since the Model S, around 2 million units, has been collecting information, comparing the computers predictions to the driver's actions and identifying objects in the real world. 3. Tesla are now only using simple cameras and sophisticated video processing to identify the environment. They do not attempt to meld visual information with lasers or ultrasonics. Humans do everything with two eyes and in Australia can legally drive with good vision in only one eye. The legalities in a full self-driving world would be easier in some ways as presumably there would be fewer crashes or blame would be shared(like happens to crashes in car parks when two cars reverse into each other). Here in Australia us Tesla owners are waiting for our update, hopefully soon. I will then make my own video.
