Great article John. I’ve had a soft spot for Range Rovers ever since I had a 1985 five speed manual in the 90s. I sold it because the gearbox was a clunky thing to use around town. It also had a gas tank taking up half the boot space. I got a 3.9 V8 fitted when the original engine started burning too much oil. Apart from that, I loved it. I am now a Rangey owner again, having bought a 1988 Highline auto very cheap from my brother in law. It had been sitting on his block being used as his tractor for the last four years and needed rescuing. My brother, who is a mechanic and Rangey owner, had done a lot of work on it when my brother in law bought it with a blown engine, seven years ago. My brother fitted a low mileage, late 90s Disco 3.9 V8, with new cam, timing chain and refaced followers, new radiator, rebuilt steering box and pump and other bits and pieces. It wasn’t driven much after that. I am doing a rolling restoration on it. The paint suffered from exposure, so I am gradually working on that. In the last 12 months I fitted leather, heated front seats out of a 2007 Alfa GT, (my other cars are Alfas), Pacemaker headers and bigger exhaust system, upgraded the EFI with a Holden Delco system and lots of other odds and ends. It pulls like a train as smooth as silk and is great fun to drive. It is nice to know it will go absolutely anywhere. I bought a camper trailer to tow behind it and we look forward to some great trips.
