There have been a few low points in this build - chief amongst them was when we did the leakdown test and realised the "good" engine was absolutely no good. When we took off the timing cover and this was underneath I had to go outside and walk around for a while. Removing the original camshaft took an amount of violence and I wasn't sure whether the block had been damaged, the bores were filthy, despair almost set in. The adventure of changing camshaft bearings was something I had never done before so that was sort-of fun other than my heart was in my mouth for a lot of it. Yet here we are, a beautifully spinning rotating assembly ready for pistons and rods. The difference: wow. Before the engine would not turn over without extreme force, even after the pistons had been removed. Now...it feels new. This is me setting the timing - the new double-row timing gear is really nice and the crank gear is even degree'd so you can advance or retard the valve timing. I am not playing with that though, it's set to 0 trying to keep it stock. You can see some shadows at the top of the bores in the second photo - they are more like stains than anything else. I don't want to remove any more metal with the hone and you can see that the hone hit those areas despite the fact they are slightly off colour so they'll be fine.
