Thanks for another great article DrJohn. It was released only about four months before the EJ Holden and XL Falcon, but the Wolseley 24/80 was perhaps Australia's first luxury compact 'six' with all the extras over the standard offerings from GMH, Ford, Chrysler and BMC. Like GMH, BMC was taken by surprise at the way the buying public took to these leather equipped family sedans. As you say, GMH's emphasis was so much on the EJ Special that they never really promoted the Premier. Same with BMC. The Austin Freeway was heavily promoted, and so many people went in to buy an Austin, but drove out in a Wolseley for only £95 over the Freeway with the option of manual or automatic for £113 extra. Performance wise, they were no slouch with 80 bhp out of its 148 cu in B-Series. GMH just may have noticed the 24/80's sales figures thus vindicating the introduction of their Premier.
