The recent collapse of our local car industry proves conclusively that the future of vehicle manufacturing in this country cannot be based on mass production. We simply cannot compete with other nations in that sphere. However, I do think Australia has a big future in smaller and more specialised vehicle production, where our higher wage and costs structures can be comfortably absorbed within the unit cost of each vehicle because of the expertise required to design and construct them. Really good examples of that are vehicles like the Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle used by the Australian Army and other armed forces and made right here in Australia. Or the excellent Tomcar commercial off-road utility vehicle that can be adapted to suit dozens of different roles. The possibilities are endless and we have a great skills base that just needs to be harnessed and redirected.
