He was a genius, leading car design rather than following trends, although he did seem to sell the same design to several companies: My favourite is the 404, which looked very similar to the Morris Oxford & Fiat 1800 (PF sold them the same design) but was a far better seller, selling almost 2.9 million from 1960 to 1991, far sleeker due to the slanted engine placement & far quicker, especially the injected versions. Even today, it is lovely to drive & a great load lugger with very strong double spring rear suspension. Unlike its Morris/Austin counterpart, the estate/break was a purpose built car (not just a cut & shut saloon with an estate roof) with a longer wheelbase & a wonderful weighted cantilever boot door.
