My favourite family escape machine was the BF Falcon wagon I reluctantly parted with a few years ago. Sometimes we'd hit the road just as she was and stay in hotels/motels/caravan lodges etc and other times we towed a camper trailer, which was no problem with the rugged leaf-sprung rear end. The death of the Falcon wagon in 2010 after 50 years of loyal service to Aussie families and businesses was a sad day for me. That thing was just the best for road tripping. Plenty of power with great fuel economy, heaps of interior space for two adults/two kids and a massive load area which, importantly, could be accessed internally. The convenience of this was never more appreciated than when I started trialling dual-cab utes and had to stop and get out every time my passengers needed something like a pillow, warm jumper, drink bottle or packet of chips. With those light items packed right behind the rear seats, the kids could just reach over and grab them at any time. The rest of the load was restrained by a sturdy cargo net with ratchet tie-downs, as a vertical steel mesh cargo barrier would not have allowed this convenient access. I still see plenty of these Falcon wagons around today and most appear to be well looked after. They are obviously prized by their owners and I know why.
