When I was much younger, my Alfetta GTV threw the timing chain so I parked it up for repairs and went looking for a 2nd hand daily driver. I drove two cars that surprised me, the original Suzuki Swift GTi and a Honda CRX. The Honda was amazing. Revved to the moon, great interior that felt downright exotic and fantastic handling. The styling with the window at the rear of the tailgate was pretty exotic too. Pity it was too much money for me at that time as they are now collectors cars. The Swift GTi was half the price, sounded like a horde of angry bees and while not as swift (ha ha) as the CRX was a barrel of laughs in an entirely different way. I didn't expect to like either of them, but I bought the Swift and greatly enjoyed it for a couple of years.
Thanks SY for the memory jog on the brilliant little Honda CRX. I really wanted one when new but they were way beyond my meagre budget at the time. They were pretty active in motor sport too, which included a popular one-make series in the UK and solid results in endurance racing, highlighted by a podium finish in the small car class and 16th outright in the 1989 Spa 24 Hour (pictured).
