There's always someone coming from left-field in any of these discussions and here I am. I had to laugh when Chrysler US introduced their 'Cab-Forward' concept in the 1990s. Touted as if they had invented it, this was the very antithesis of the long nose and short rear concept as in Mustangs, E-Types and square rigger MGs. However, Alec Issigonis had perfected it right there and then in 1959 with the Mini. Exemplified by the 1964 Austin 1800 it demonstrated how much passenger room you could get out of a relatively small car in relation to its length. Styling took a back seat, if it was ever even considered. It has been described as having all the grace of a British Rail shunter which is probably why I love them so much. These pics of the original 1800 and a mid-'90s Dodge Intrepid demonstrate Issigonis' thinking at least 35 years before Chrysler's. Note how the windscreen line comes down in front of the front wheels.
