The second car I owned was a 78 Subaru 4WD wagon which was utterly faithful for 3 years in the mid 80?s. It was the last of the tall narrow original shape with big bumpers, 1600 & Holley carb! As they had no centre diff it could only be driven in 4WD on very soft surfaces such as sand, otherwise it would get wound up and the lever would jam in 4WD. It faded from red to orange & rusted badly but just kept going?
Did your Sooby look something like this Sports380? I remember a bloke in our volunteer bushfire brigade bought one new back then and promptly took it on one of our 4x4 adventures in the company of 'serious' off-roaders like Land Rovers, Land Cruisers and Datsun Patrols. Although ground clearance was an issue in places, it actually performed really well which pleasantly surprised all of us. That wagon was an important step in building the Subaru brand in Australia. Mind you, I haven't seen one in probably decades.
