Another fond memory of the Group C era was BMW's involvement from 1981 to 1984 with a factory-backed team headed by Frank Gardner and its BMW 635 CSi coupes presented in glorious black and gold JPS colours with a mirror-glass finish. Group C's punitive minimum weight rules meant the car had to run as heavy as a 5.0-litre V8 Commodore yet with less power from its 3.5-litre inline six. It was looking very competitive at Bathurst in 1983 when allowed to run the M1's DOHC 24-valve cylinder head, but a tank full of dirty fuel ended their race after one lap and prompted allegations of sabotage!
