I bought my first Alfetta sedan from Murphy Johnson Imported Cars in Brookvale back in 1974 & it made me an Alfa fan from the first drive. What other medium car in 1972 had these features: DOHC engine with sodium cooled exhaust valves, 5 speed gearbox / transaxle at the back end, 4 wheel disc brakes, inboard at the rear to reduce unsprung weight, Laminated windscreen, Heated rear window. There may have been a few - Lancia, BMW, Peugeot perhaps came close, but none had all those, I don't think. Sure, the gearbox was a bit slow to use because of the long linkages, second gear synchro was c*** & the clutches certainly weren't the best - mine gave up at about 40,000 on Anzac Parade near Moore Park. Just stopped working & stopped me dead at a set of lights!! I got it fixed at Skandia Motors in Kings X & was asked if I was from the country (I am) as "the city boys come in at about 25,000 for a clutch". I nearly died !! Cost nearly $500 too - in 1978 !! Sold it later that year (at wife's insistence) after a second very expensive gearbox rebuild that Alfa Romeo Australia finally agreed to supply free parts for. Since then I've owned a Lancia Beta Coupe, a Fiat 124 BC Sport, a BMW 2002 Touring - great car & currently for sale by The Healey Factory, plus the odd Ford & Holden. But the Alfas are my favourites- A 1981 Alfetta sedan, rusted away terminally, but the motor is in my son's 1974 Alfetta sedan currently being restored. A 1985 & a 1986 2.5 Alfa 75, both still owned & will eventually make one really good 1985 model. A 1990 Alfa 164 - too big for me so sold it 2 years ago along with a 1989 parts car. A 1976 Alfetta 1.8 just about to go onto club rego, & pictured below. A 156 Twin Spark 5 speed is my daily drive, so I guess I'd nearly qualify as an "Alfa-natic" Have just (May 2017) acquired a 2003 156 Sportwagon Selespeed too !! Not sure yet about the Selespeed - different !!
