Indian car maker, Tata produced the Nano between 2008 and 2018. A four door sedan with an overall length of the original Mini, it was an attempt to get whole families off their scooters and motor bikes. The initial price was around US$1500, although that rose to about $2500 later. It was not a commercial success as those who could afford it, generally paid more for a larger and more conventional car. Those on scooters could not get to that level. It was as much a marvel of packaging as Alec Issigonis' Mini of 1959. It was built right down to a price, with many of the things we take for granted omitted. Early ones sometimes caught fire which didn't help its reputation, but this was rectified. A 2-cylinder 624 cc engine was in the back where the boot normally sits, but there was very little room for anything else. To accomodate four doors, the car was higher than the Mini. Anyone who has been to India would have seen whole families on scooters, as I had with this family of five being monstered by a truck while Dad tried to re-start his bike. The sentiment was in the the right place, but India's transportation problems seemed to me to be insurmountable.
