Dr John - it's funny when you say the current crop of US front-drivers are mainly blandsville and I agree. When the Edsel was being planned in the mid-50s, everyone said they had trouble telling all the cars of the day apart and so Ford wanted something that stood out, even from a tall building. A vertical grille and horizontal tail-lights seemed the answer, and the rest is history. In surveys taken a few years later, groups of people who knew very little about them were asked to name the best looking 1958 US car. The Edsel scored highly along with some of the Mopars. Harley Earl's '58 offerings were all rated just above or below Studebaker and Packard. I've said here I love the Corvair, but a '58 Edsel could also share a space in my garage - turquoise Citation convertible......
