Great review and I’ll always wish I kept the VY senator signature I owned for a few years; Was a beautiful car at the time. Re Steve?s comment that the alloytech is surely better than the ecotec oh how it should have been true... but wasn?t. For a period we had both a vz Calais and a vy commodore s pack in the garage, the ecotec surprised me every time I drove it on how competitive it remained. Granted it didn’t rev nearly as high and was out of steam at 5000rpm compared to 7ish for the alloytech but the alloytech was just so flat and disappointing in general driving and to be honest sounded like a vacuum cleaner- definitely not comparable to the euro sixes of similar configuration. It even sounded like the ecotec at lower revs. Bizarre considering all the tech they loaded into it. Economy wasn’t better either! The Five speed auto (vz Calais and sv6 got this as well as the higher output motor) was excellent but by the time the vy rolled around the old 4 speed auto was very well sorted so not the huge leap forward people think. We still have the vy which is saying something- at a well maintained 355000kms retains its original engine and driveline- other half won?t part with it! While I rarely drive it now days, when I do I am always impressed with its comfort and general ability, especially considering my daily drive is a 2014 BMW 5 series!
