Did my license test in 1985 in the ACT. The car was my mothers 1974 GC Galant, a 1600 Automatic (sample photo, not actual car). I did the test on my 17th birthday which was fine back then (L plates for 3 months, then full license). I'm kind of glad they changed the rules, at one point most of the kids in high school were being taught to drive by other kids who just got their license. I ended up with the car, broke it (dead transmission, 2nd headgasket blown on the 1600), replaced the drivetrain with a 5 speed, 2.6 engine in the days when japanese component imports were extremely common and very cheap. The 2.6 was longer than the original Saturn 1600 but available as an option in Japan, so a very easy swap. The brakes were always a bit...underwhelming but otherwise it was a good little car to drive, if a bit hairy after the engine swap. edit: I'm teaching the last of our kids to drive at the moment, she asks questions about my driving and I realise it's become so instinctual I can't remember basic things like what's the best way to turn the wheel more than 90 degrees or when do you start braking for a stop sign. I'm having to re-learn it all myself at the same time just so I can explain it.
