There was a time when the taillight barely made an appearance and were there simply to mark the end of the vehicle. No need for two when one will do and the smaller the better. The British seemed particularly parsimonious with their taillights.
The innate conservative thinking of the British is best summed up by a 1954 Russell Brockbank cartoon of a man using the tail-light of an Austin A50 Cambridge to make toast - they were thought to be overly large! Compared with today's efforts, they really are pretty small.
