All very chic, but Renault countered with a more sophisticated interpretation in the 1960s with the Renault 4L wagon. Same simplicity in design with "upholstery" consisting of padded rags stretched over a tubular frame, easily removed for impromptu lunching with just one wing nut. But the big difference was the huge increase in power with a four cylinder water cooled engine of a heady 750cc. We had one for years and I remember trying to beat a Melbourne tram off from the traffic lights, which could be achieved with a rolling start. That engine was mounted backwards which meant the gearbox was just behind the front bumper, activated by a simple metal rod passing over the engine and protruding through the middle of the dashboard. Would love to get another one.
