I had a 1988 XJ40 for about 5 years as my toy. It was a 3.6 litre Sovereign with Bordeaux red and Magnolia hide. When I first purchased it, I enjoyed a very close relationship with RACQ tilt trays whose drivers knew where I lived by the sight of the car. I worked through the issues which I put down to the previous owner not wanting to spend any money. Once these issues were addressed the car became ultra reliable. She was a joy to drive and made me feel good with the world every time we went out. The XJ40 seems a little unloved due to the perception of the styling but I think they look great. I even prefer the big square headlights which are amazing at night. Being 6 feet 4 inches tall, I would have liked a little more room but this was my sports car after all. When I bought her, I was looking at a Champagne example but the red (red cars are faster) won out. I sold her to a chap from Adelaide who flew to Brisbane and drover her back with absolutely no problems. He was amazed that he got better fuel economy than from his Toyota Aurion.
