The British described the Renault 16 as a 'saloon-c**-estate car', and there just doesn't seem to be any reference as to what the Austin Maxi and Morris Nomad were in any of BL's literature. The Maxi I owned and loved was registered as a wagon. When the Nomad was launched in 1969, BMCA lobbied state governments to register it as a wagon so it could be parked in loading zones. I think the term hatch came along with the VW Golf in the '70s.
