Probably the best known 1800, aside from the London-Sydney Marathon cars, was an early production Mark 1, registered DYL 090. While not exactly a press car, it was used by the team of drivers who took it and a Mini De Luxe DYL 564 on the epic figure of eight trip around Australia in late 1965. Made famous by Evan Green's book, 'Journeys with Gelignite Jack' and a movie 'Crossroads Alice', both cars had their engines stripped down on their return as they were testing a new oil for Castrol. The Mini was sold to an employee who certainly knew its history, while the 1800 was kept on strength for about three years for promotional purposes. I remember taking it out to get dirty so we could display it at the Royal Easter Show. It was also used as a support car for the numerous rallies that Evan Green was involved with. It was sold off to an apprentice, who disappointed all of us by re-registering it under another number so no-one would know its history. From there it was lost until the late 1980s when discovered still going and a piece of paperwork indicating that this could be the actual car. The last I heard of it, it was being rebuilt in South Australia. It is seen here in 1997 with two other ex-BMC company cars; my 1800 and the prototype Freeway.
