Hi Mark and others on the forum ... did you all survive Christmas ? ... talking about survival, word seems to be that the Holden Commodore will live on after 2017 as a version of a new Buick sedan to be made in China by one of the GM Shanghai joint venture companies. And so, I figured why not mention it here under the topic of badge engineering. From what Joshua Dowling has reported elsewhere, the story goes that some time ago Holden had been awarded the task to design a new large car to be manufactured in China as a Buick and in Australia as a Holden ... not surprising in itself, given that Holden's prior WL Statesman cars were remodelled for China to become the Buick Royaum and the later WM series becoming the Buick Park Avenue. Now that Australian manufacturing is to cease, the tip is that the new car will still appear as a Holden, but made in China ... one stumbling point appears to be the question of engine powerplant, especially given that Chinese Buick cars tend to have smaller engines than their US equivalents. It's one thing for Australians to adjust to a front wheel drive Commodore, but will they also swallow a turbo four-cylinder engine ? ... the latter hasn't exactly transformed buyer's preferences in relation to the FG Falcon.
